Die Technik, die jeder kennt und vor allem ‘ablasert’ nennt sich QR. (Spricht man: ku-ar und steht für quick response) Naja, vielleicht nicht in europäischen Gefilden-NOCH nicht. Aber sie kommt, mit Riesenschritten. Japan hat sie schon vor langem erobert. Die könnten nicht mehr leben ohne die schwarz-weißen Vierecke auf Werbeflächen, Postern, diversen Plakaten oder sogar ganzen Hauswänden.

QRs sind dafür gedacht, Eck-Daten oder andere Infos zu enthalten, die dann mit Handyprogrammen gelesen und gleich am richtigen Ort (Kalender, Browser…etc) geöffnet werden. Das können jetzt (Liebes-)Botschaften, Veranstaltungsorte mit Zeiten und Eintrittspreisen oder einfach nur eine Webpage sein. Einige gescheite Grazer haben sich darüber schon ihre Köpfe zerbrochen und in folgendem Video die Technologie ein wenig vorgestellt:

Der eigentliche Sinn und Zweck der QRs war es, der japanischen Autoindustrie mit kompakten Infos logistisch unter die Arme zu greifen. Der Denso Konzern, der Toyota untersteht, markierte mithilfe von QR Baugruppen und Komponenten der Bauindustrie. Klingt ein wenig langweilig, war es vielleicht auch. Was es aber vor allem auch war, war genial. Und das wird jetzt auf Teufel komm raus vermarktet. Zumindest in Japan-NOCH!

Es beginnt auf vereinzelten Postern, verbreitet sich aber sicher irrsinnig schnell, denn rasche Information ohne großen Aufwand klingt richtig schön nach 21. Jahrhundert. Und so werden wir diese Schwarz-weißen Kasterln bald auch in Zeitungen, auf Werbeflächen, auf menschlicher Haut (sowas Tolles wird die Tätowierindustrie aufsaugen, wie in den 90ern ‘Arschgeweihe’ und chinesiche Zeichen) oder auch auf diversen Designerprodukten wie Gürtelschnallen sehen. In diesem Sinne: Wir sahen, laserten und waren informiert.

Believe it or not: All of these different images have the same root: They are varieties of the famous Mercedes Benz-star. The program Mathematica makes it possible. The magic word is: generative design.

Just the imagination that a simple form only consisting out of three points framed by a circle can be formed into a whole new multiplicity of signs that I would never connect with the Mercedes-Logo, but with cinematography, folk art or some occult organisations makes me goggle. However, this is for real!

This program by Wolfram Research helps you with modeling, simulation, visualization, development and documentation. The pictures, which are displayed here should only demonstrate what can be done out of very simple forms that everybody recognizes immediately.

But how does it work? As Chris Carlson, a graphics develop

er at Wolfram Research puts it: “The geometry of the Mercede Benz-star is easily described in a few lines of Mathematica code.” At the end even he was surprised that a “straightforward parameterization” can lead to such a bulk of new images.

“If you’re doing anything technical-think mathematica”-is the catchy phrase that should get everybody on board the program that has been developed throughout the last 20 years.

What came out of a more complex logo, namely one designed for a special edition of a magazine by Franco Grignani, is even more impressing.

this program, even though i’m not into mathematics at all. Maybe there is a slight chance that Mathematica7 will change my mind?

Cowgirl in El Paso, Texas

Mleak studies art at Carnegie Mellon University and is very engaged in projects to make people aware of which food they are eating. Especially in her project „Where it came from“ she took the All-American-Lunch Meat „Bologna“ and etched pigs and roosters in it.

This raises a question: Does „Bologna“ consist out of both pork AND chicken? Well, but maybe this is not the point mleak wanted to make…as she tells us on her Flickr page: „Ultimately, I would like to show the entire process from animal to ambiguous pink slice of meat over the course of a package of lunch meat, beginning here with bologna. This neat packaged disc of food has always seemed so far removed from its source.“

But she’s not only experimenting with meat. Also cheese and toast can’t escape her laser. The Atkins Nightmare Project stands for a sandwich which already includes all of the ingedients, because they are etched on the bread. And last but not least the plays on words she did on American cheese questioning „the American legacy of the consumption of super-processed foods.“

Shouldn’t I thank God that I’m European?

Ich bin also ein Wind. Auch schön warm. Obwohl ich mich so eigentlich noch nie gesehen habe. Eher als lokaljournalistisches Genie, das auch aus Geschichten die es absolut nicht wert sind, darüber zu schreiben, Anekdoten macht, die schon das ein oder andere Leben verändert haben.

Dabei bin ich über Kartenleser gestolpert (ich habe natürlich die besten Zukunftschancen), Glas-Digeridoospieler, österreichische Eisbarone im kalifornischen Exil, Puppenspielerinnen, Fußballspieler, die sich nach einem Bier aus St. Louis schimpfen, etc. etc.!

Hin und wieder bin ich auch reiselustig (eher öfter als seltener), dann setz ich mich ins Flugzeug und besuche meine Freunde, die scheinbar in der ganzen Welt verstreut sind. Manchmal verstreue ich mich auch selbst, zum Beispiel nach HH oder Salamanca. Nach Essex oder Paris.

Das (oder so was in der Art) haben sich wahrscheinlich die Gründerväter des Berliner Unternehmens chocrí gedacht. Wieder mal finden wir den Beweis dafür, das gute Ideen mit dem richtigen Marketing und Image ein unschlagbares Erfolgskonzept sind. Mittlerweile gibt es chocrí schon ein halbes Jahr (gegründet am 1. September 2008) und das mit recht würde ich sagen!

Zur Zeit läuft natürlich eine Muttertagsaktion, damit man noch auf den letzten Abdrücker (ja, im wahrsten Sinne des Wortes!) ein schönes persönliches Geschenk ergattern kann. Und wahrlich: Sogar mit Muttertagsaufdruck sind die Schokis zu erstehen.

Ich bin ja ganz stark für dunkle Schokoladenmasse, ganze Chilischoten, Salzbrezen, Rosmarin und Echtgoldpulver. Perfekt ist

die (ungewöhnliche) Geschmacksexplosion. Darauf bin ich echt gespannt wie ein Regenschirm. Wann kommt denn das Packerl endlich?

Auch für Firmen gibt es spezielle Angebote und für die Schokounschlüssigen auch die Gutschein-Variante. Doch was wirklich hervorgehoben gehört ist, dass die fleißigen Bienchen bei chocrí mittlerweile schon 5000 Euro für den Verein DIV Kinder gesammelt haben. Daumen hoch!

Für mich bleibt jetzt nur mehr die Frage: Soll ich schnell vorm Muttertag noch ein Baby werfen, damit ich dann auch eine Schoki krieg oder klappt das auch ohne Mutterschaft?

Tobias Kestel, Designer from Graz, was thinking about eternity during our last laser cut workshop
and came up with a partly romantic  partly philosophic approach to customized give-aways:

Carving messages or symbols (hearts?) into trees is like adding a timestamp. And usually people only do that when lots of feelings are involved. Of course, you are actually wounding the tree’s bark – but time will heal it and the tree will keep the message over time, and it will
eventually be changed and transformed by the growth of the tree.

Rediscovering a long-ago carved symbol after years brings back memories and probably a smile because you wonder why you were so sentimental about something or someone (sometimes even about yourself?) making you search and mark the right tree, maybe after dark…

By scaling this procedure to a fracture of the “real thing” you could now be able to cut out the unfulfilled part and give the message together with the whole tree to whom it may concern right away! People could choose to have either a branch or a selection of Bonsai trees marked The
laser-engraved tree or branch will then be sent per mail to the one person.

Putting the branch in water would grow roots so it can be planted.

I tested the result first with a freshly cut wicker branch. Then with a bonsai tree. The detailing is quite good, although the symbol is 9x9mm small. I was surprised how quickly the branch grew roots and after three weeks it thrives and got new leaves. Time to plant it and watch it grow,
maybe give it to a special person….
